Thank you for your interest in the PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency program at Rochester General Hospital.
Our program offers a robust mixture of learning experiences spanning pharmacy operations, patient-facing clinical activities, and population health, with a goal of creating well-rounded pharmacists prepared for clinical practice or further PGY2 training. Residents will be challenged to advance their clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and lifelong learning skills. As a community pharmacy program, there will be a focus on business development and strategy, to build the skills needed to advance the profession of pharmacy with feasible and sustainable new clinical programming.
At Rochester General Hospital, teamwork and a passion for learning are highly valued. About the Program
The Rochester General Hospital PGY-1 Community Pharmacy residency is a 53-week full time program building on the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education. Our mission is to prepare our residents for careers as competent, independent pharmacists, by developing fundamental skills, including clinical problem-solving, self-evaluation, and interdisciplinary communication. Our Program aims to bring forth future leaders in the profession of pharmacy.
Rochester General Hospital Community Pharmacy residents learn in a setting that embraces teamwork – both within the department and throughout the hospital. In our program, residents receive training in essential elements that allow them to become key members of a comprehensive health care team. These elements include:
- Provide safe and accurate prescription dispensing.
- Manage and improve the medication-use process.
- Provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams.
- Exercise leadership and practice management skills.
- Demonstrate project management skills.
- Provide medication and practice-related education/training.
- Utilize medical informatics.
Rochester General Hospital Department of Outpatient Pharmacy
Rochester General Hospital has 3 owned outpatient pharmacies:
- The General Apothecary, our largest location by volume, is located on-site and provides discharge medications services in addition to being the pharmacy of choice for many returning patients and employees
- Riedman Pharmacy, located inside an ambulatory medical campus, along with internal medicine, pediatrics, dental, imaging, and lab services, offers our largest immunization and adherence programs
- WIlson Pharmacy, our health system’s Specialty Pharmacy, operates an impressive logistical operation, in addition to pharmacy services through embedded clinical team
These pharmacies are a part of Rochester Regional Health total portfolio of 6 community pharmacies, 1 specialty pharmacy, and 1 home infusion pharmacy.
Accreditation
The Rochester General Hospital PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Residency is currently in Candidate Status with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Our Purpose
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Pharm.D. education and outcomes to contribute to the development of a clinical pharmacist responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Recruitment Events
Please join us for one of our virtual recruitment nights. You’ll get a chance to meet our residents and preceptors, hear about our program, and we’ll also have plenty of time for you to ask questions. Register for a session on Wednesday, November 19 from 12:30-2:00 pm or Wednesday, December 17 from 4:30-6:00 pm.
We will also be attending the virtual showcases hosted by NYSCHP and ACCP/SNPhA.
We Require:
- Graduate or candidate for graduation from an ACPE accredited pharmacy program (or one in process of pursuing accreditation)
- New York State pharmacy intern permit or eligible for intern permit
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in New York State
- United States citizen, permanent resident visa or eligibility for a non-immigrant visa that allows work or training in the United States. We are unable to sponsor a H-1B visa due to time constraints with the match process.
Interviews
Interviews will be held in-person for candidates who live in Western New York. A virtual option will be offered for candidates living outside the area.

$10,000 employer paid coverage with option to purchase added coverage up to 4 times annual salary.
Plan for Short-term Disability
Residents are entitled to up to six months of pay in the event of any disability, compensated at 60% of the resident stipend.
Long-term Disability
Option to purchase 50-67% of pay coverage
Retirement Program
Option to enroll in tax-deferred annuity plan.
Dental Plan
Option to purchase one of two plans available
Travel Stipend (Program Based)
For attending two professional meetings (one national, one regional)
Salaries are paid on a bi-weekly basis. The current annual salary is:
